Climate Change

Our first project sets out to communicate the urgency of climate change . We use a different approach to those traditionally used to communicate environmental messages in Africa, focusing on the mythologies of the region

African Storytelling

Since ancient times, African oral storytelling tradition is rooted in the natural world and is woven out of the human experience. These stories of intersectionality are the best example of how we should be living on planet earth.

A Message For You

Our Roots are our values.

To honor our planet is to honor our ancestors and their relationship with their lands, waters, and animals.

Our Branches are symbols of hope and community. Stretching out and reminding us that there is hope and that we should embrace the kind of optimism that allows us to face the complex process of repairing and restoring our planet.

Our Leaves are people, bringing branches to life by acting in ways that sustain the earth, even if a little.

The YUNIYA Challenge

At YUNIYA, we are creating multiple avenues for people to participate in climate change activism. We do this through a challenge.

The YUNIYA challenge is an exciting interactive weekly storytelling challenge designed to:

  • Communicate the urgency of protecting the ecosystems of the world.

  • Make the story of a better world so irresistible; you want it right now.

  • Help you feel in control of a new world story that we can start to imagine.

How does it work?

  • Log in to YUNIYA. A new challenge is released every week.

  • Do the challenge, and use the resources provided.

  • Track your progress using the learning guide. Celebrate and share your milestones!

Climate Change in Africa

Just over 10,000 years ago, the earth's climate stabilised. From the formation of mountains to the encasing of land under ice and water. The seasons were predictable and the weather was reliable. The earth was home to an astonishing variety of species. The world was in an unusually benign period. Until now!

The stability the world depends on is breaking. Our activities are destroying our planet.

We often talk about thinking about "the future we want to pass on to our children and grandchildren". However, young people alive today in Africa are suffering the effects of climate change.

This story of climate change is one of instability as well as inequality. Ultimately, all of us will feel the impact of climate change; however, today, those who contributed the least to climate change are suffering the most.

Did You Know?

Africa has contributed negligibly to the changing climate, with less than three per cent of global emissions. Africa however remains one of the most vulnerable areas of the world in line to be hit hardest by climate change. This vulnerability to the effects of climate change is due to the fact that African economies rely on climate-dependent sectors like agriculture and their capabilities to cope and adapt to environmental disasters effectively are generally limited.

The Impact of Climate Change In Africa

Every Few Years

It is not only too much or too little water that overwhelms the African continent. As a result of global emissions, the West Pacific has rapidly warmed up, resulting in rainfall deficits in dryer areas in Eastern Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. This debilitating drought and hunger threaten the livelihoods of millions of people in these countries.

Our Work on Climate Change

YUNIYA-UG

At YUNIYA, we are committed to contributing to transforming agricultural systems that both limit their impact on and are resilient to climate change.

We do this in collaboration with Africa Agribusiness Services, an agribusiness service provider that offers technical, financial, advisory and management services across the value chain in East Africa.

AAS work on these three pillars of Climate Smart Agriculture -productivity, adaptation and mitigation.

1. Sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes.

2. Adapting and building resilience to climate change.

3. Reducing emissions where possible.
