Inspiring Challenges and Activities For Design And Technology Studies

We are supporting teachers in implementing Design and Technology programs.

Wired

The Wired challenge is designed to develop a range of skills that support students in both their studies and the workplace.

Our DIY series and inspirational, hands-on resources and activities are student-centred and creative, including reading, watching videos, and listening to audio.

Our theme, WIRED, is created and inspired by MALENG, a childhood story about a boy and his wire car and the issues we are facing in the world today.

Our activities make learning fun and easier to manage, digest, and implement at home, at school, and on the go.

Take part in our Wire Car Challenge.

In the challenge, individuals or teams learn how to build a wire car after their favourite car models.

The challenge is an exciting weekly one, designed for you to learn in small chunks and get better fast at making the wire cars. A blend of various activities also helps you learn more about African culture. You can start anytime, anywhere, and at your own pace.

A wire car he loved very much.

He called her Maleng, meaning beautiful.

One day, Maleng got stolen from him. Here's what happened next...

Wired

Scrap metal becomes a car. Bottle tops for headlights, lights flashing.

In East, Southern and Central Africa, toy cars are fashioned from scrap wire.

The making of the wire cars shows acute powers of observation, great ingenuity and a basic understanding of mechanics by the African children who made them.

Since the launch of Maleng, a childhood story about a boy and his wire car, in July 2021, we have received countless wire car stories from people around the world, from Congo to Angola to Sudan to Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Connecting people, places and ideas

We have connected with amazing creators who share our passion and now have a growing community of wire car enthusiasts making wire cars with family and friends through our workshops.

To allow maximum flexibility in learning how to make a wire car, we offer the workshops both face-to-face and online through a challenge.

Wire car street cruise

Participants in the challenge also get to join us on a street cruise listening to a specially curated list of music from the African continent.

"We raced down the streets and pathways. Bottle tops for headlights, lights flashing. When the sun set, the race was over.  Odongo and I always lingered on for a while. Somehow solemnly aware that we would remember these days for the rest of our lives."- Topha
