The Gambia River

Some rivers are relatively straight, while others twist and turn across the landscape, similar to the scribble of someone checking if their pen is dry.

The Gambia River is approximately 700 miles (1,130 km) long.

The Gambia River follows a winding route as it flows from its source in Fouta Djallon in Guinea and flows westwards through the countries of Senegal and The Gambia.

The Gambia River runs through the heart of The Gambia. The Gambia is incredibly narrow, measuring less than 30 miles wide at its widest!

Fun Fact: The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa.

The area where The Gambia is today was once part of Ghana empire from the 5th to 11th century and later Mali Empire from the 13th century.
